I need help from some US history buffs!!!?

I have to do a ''broadcast project'' in english for the book "the catcher in the rye''. my broadcast is supposed to be about 1940's and 1950's world happenings.
can someone tell me some things that were going on
like
-pearl harbor
-wars going on
etc
 
the ink below is a timeline, maybe you'll find something in there

1940's pearl harbor, america goes to war, fdr dies, america drops bomb on hiroshima

1950's Eisenhower is elected. Civil rights movement gains steam. Joseph McCarthy hearing, communism scare, korea, Space race begins when russia launches sputnik
