I have to submit 3-6 pages of poetry for an application to get into alabama school of fine art. Im a good writer but poetry is not my thing..
any tips?

Be honest. Don't try to be someone else or something you are not. A lot of people get caught up in imitating other writers and they forget that writing is about YOU and who you are, your experiences and your life. Poetry is not about sounding "pretty" or "good", but about being honest and frank. Sometimes it works just to say it, straight out, what you want to say, and from there add the details and the insights.

One thing I have learned which really helps with poetry is be specific. Avoid words like love, hope, war, hate, pain, joy, etc. These are huge, broad terms and it is hard to relate to them. You can say "love", but it's much more powerful to say "love is two people lost in each others' eyes". "War" is not "people dying and killing" but the "splayed open insides of a young man on crimson grass".

Lastly- details work! But don't get lost in them. Some people get caught up in writing pretty words and pictures and forget about what they are really trying to say.

One thing I wanted to add- Someone above mentioned having a big vocabulary. Poetry is NOT about being smart or fancy. Any form of art is about expressing your experiences so that as many people as possible can gain your insights and relate to you. Using big words will only shrink your audience.

close your eyes and imagine all your emotions on paper:) i know it may seem weird just try it it might work. or just start writing...that little light bulb in your head is bound to light up sooner or later. once you find a key word or phrase im sure the words will flow.

Poetry is a short piece of imaginative writing. It is usually very personal in nature, representing a feeling or emotion. Poetry is probably the most free form of writing, with few restrictions like plot and character. Like any art form, poetry takes a commitment and thrives with practice and knowledge of the craft.

Know metaphors and how to use them. Use them while speaking to hear how they sound. Think of them constantly and try to make them more eloquent and beautiful all the time. After a while they should be able to flow freely and naturally

Have a wide vocabulary. This comes from reading, writing and speaking. Read avidly, and try to incorporate new words while writing. Practice using new words in conversations

Use imagery. Imagery is vital to poetry. Know how to describe things in ways that no one else describes them. Be aware of all five of the senses and how to describe effectively what each is experiencing.

Get outside opinions. Talk to friends, join online groups or even enroll for a course. All feedback is constructive, whether positive or negative. Learn to grow from criticism; it will only help. Don't be afraid to share work with an audience.
