i need help asap on ps3 and a hard drive?

i got a 500 gb simpletech external hard drive and i want to view the things i got on the hard drive on the ps3 for example like the movies because i dont want to waste my time burning stuff. plz help now asap plz!
i heard i need to format it, how do i do that and would it delete anything
the hard drive wasnt made by sony, it was made by simple tech
 
You should just be able to connect the hard drive to the ps3 and it should read it automatically.
 
you shouldnt need to format it, it should already be formatted.it might need to be formatted if the external harddrive wasnt made by sony
