I need financial aid ASAP for an exchange program! Please help!?

I will be leaving for Japan in August to start a student exchange program at a Japanese university in Osaka for 1 year. This is and has been part of my dream for as long as I can remember. I was accepted as one of only 5 students at my uni to go in the exchange. Problem is, I need about $15,000 now for the entire year (housing costs, travel expenses, living costs, etc). I applied for financial aid, but was denied because I was forced to drop 3 courses last semester due to family issues and commuting issues (putting me in "not making academic progress" status). Now I wrote an appeal letter which I am praying will be accepted. But I have to wait until the 2nd week of July, in which I'll be busy training with the military!
So needless to say, the financial aid office at my college has been little to no help. Further, I don't know anything about financial aid because my stateside tuition and fees has been covered by a waiver up until now. So I have NO clue about financial aid or what to do to get the money needed for this exchange. Not going is not an option, this is my dream!
So, what can I do?

Please, if anybody has ANY advice, I am in dire need at this time.
I am totally clueless about anything involving financial aid so please, help me!

Thank you very much.

Try going to your bank and asking about loan options. The interest rate will probably be higher than with a traditional student loan. If you're in the military, investigate if they offer any financing options.
