While trying to remove the flywheel a small bolt and washer got stuck in the crankshaft. The washer mushroomed over the bolt head and while getting the bolt out we damaged the threads on the crankshaft. We found a reverse thread tap to re-tap it but most people have said it's not going to work. The piece is $500 and I just don't want to spend the money on a new crankshaft. Please, if you have any advise!
Thank you guys so much for your help. I just called a machine shop, I'm in Cocoa, FL by the way, and they said $70 to fix it!! You guys rock!! Thank you so much for all your help!

A competent machine shop may be able to rethread the end of your crankshaft to the next size or perhaps weld extra material to the hole, drill and retap. This may all be just as expensive as sourcing a new crank as polarbear advised. You will still have to size the new crank to be sure you get the right rod bearings. Rebalancing will not be necessary if you repair the old threads

I would try looking for a salvage piece. Its worth not having to drop 500 bux. As popular as this bike is/was, there's got to be plenty of wrecked units available. I got no idea what neck of the woods you are in, but this guy over in Ft Worth has almost everything. I bet they would give you a good price and ship it to you.
