I need a list of good plants for a small garden?

I'm tired of seeing all the dirt and ugly weed that grow in my backyard. I'm going to start out with a small garden but am having a hard time deciding what plants might be good. I live in zone 6. the garden will be mostly in sun and all the plants would be watered by hand about 3 times a week. Please i nee help. Just need a list of good hardy plants for a raised garden i'm making.
 
I really love primroses and they need light shade so plant something large above them to give them shade. Hydrangeas or lilacs grow larger over the years and are very pretty they would cover enough space with flowers underneath or just to cover it all together. all of those should be planted in spring. for planting now for spring growth I would do peony, daffodils and tulips or alliums which are very easy to grow and very sturdy. just fyi peonies rarely bloom first year but the others do.
