Well what kind of enthusiast are you first of all?? If you are a kind of enthusiast as a builder & Tuner with the style of making BEST of what you already have. cuz its POSSIBLE! but hey NO matter what you choose its going to CO$T $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
All D-Series engines SOHC(1.5L/1.6L/1.7L v-tec/non v-tec) are mostly interchangeable trades, meaning the mounts, trans, axels, wire harness, heads/blocks are bolt right in - plug and play that will be less complicated & definitely cheaper than what you will if you do a full major motor swap upgrade. such as the popular or commonly swapped B-Series, H-Series, and K-Series. Also the endless possibilities of "Fine Tuning" the mixtures of interchanged parts.
IMPORTANT things to look into is the exact specs, dimensions, ECU & wiring harness/clips, mounting points & mounts, transmissions, ratio of the gearing in the trans in ratio to the power band of the motor, you may also need the matching CV axels and or hub/rotors, then also compensate the weight differences as the common motor swaps "B/H/K-Series" which are DOHC will be slightly heavier and bigger. DEFINITELY find a trusty yet reasonably priced reputable shop that can do any of the fabrications, mods and builds that can get the tools & parts needed/wanted to do what you want to accomplish.
The 1st two links i include show several detailed engines specs and i also include a 3rd link which is my car and my experiences as a STREET/STRIP DAILY DRIVER EXPERIENCED HONDA ENTHUSIAST BUILDER & TUNER and in Honolulu HAWAII. Hope all my info HELP you out - NOTHING is IMPOSSIBLE, but instead greatly DISCOURAGED. Discouraged by pro & con evaluation, effort, CO$T, and availability... GOOD LUCK.
