We had to do a lab for the IB programe...and we (my group) decided to test the effect Iron II would have on two different types of bleach (Hydrogen Peroxide and Sodium Hypochlorite). We stained 4 filter papers with coffee...then we tried to bleach the first filter paper with Sodium Hypochlorite...it worked well...we tried to bleach the second filter paper with Hydorgen Peroxide...it was less effective than Sodium Hypochlorite...then we wanted to add Iron II to each type of bleach to see what would happen...because we didn't have Iron II in our lab...we asked the teacher and she told us that we could get Iron II by dissolving Ferrous Ammonium Sulfate in water...so we did that and the solution looked brown...then we added Iron II to Sodium Hypochlorite and tried to bleach the thrid filter paper...it didn't work well at all...when we bleached it, the filter paper looked brownish...lastly, we added Iron II to Hydrogen Peroxide and tried to bleach the fourth filter paper...it didn't work too...the filter paper looked greensih brown...and tiny black stuff began to form...our Chem. teacher told us that Iron was being formed...
Now we need to write an analysis for our lab report...and we are having problems...we know that Sodium Hypochlorite is stronger than Hydorgen Peroxide...Explaining what happened to the first and second filter paper is easy...but we don't know what to write about the third and fourth filter paper...we are so confused...I searched about it in the internet and found nothing...why didn't Sodium Hypochlorite and Hydrogen Peroxide work well in bleaching when we added Iron II to them...our prediction was that Hydrogen Peroxide with Iron II would be the strongest bleach because of the "Fenton's reaction". But instead of being the strongest...it didn't bleach at all...and moreover formed iron...why? It's so confusing and I am so lost...I don't know what to write...and the internet is no help...it's due this week (after 5 days)...also...I dont' know what the chemical equation will look like for any of them...
Thanks in advance
