I may have finally got it right.

So 2 weeks ago I started asthma controller nuraber... five? I've lost count.

This time, I told the doctor exactly what I wanted: A plain steroid in an HFA that can be used with a spacer, such as Flovent or Qvar. And he wrote Flovent. And just as I hoped, with this delivery system, I don't get a sore throat, even at the moderate dose (200 twice a day). On the equivalent dose of Advair or Asmanex, I was hoarse constantly. And for me, fluticasone (Flovent, Advair) seems much more effective than mometasone (Asmanex), even at supposedly equivalent dosages.

The last 5 or so days have been great. Best ever. The approach of the end of pollen season may have something to do with it as well, but however it happened, I'm glad.

My body still hates bronchiodilators, and I don't know what will happen when I get a respiratory infection. I don't know what will happen next spring. But at least I know that getting control is possible.
 
This is something to celebrate. You've been through such a long haul with all of this over the last year. I think you've become an expert at being your own advocate.

Glad you are feeling better. I've never been on any asthma med other than Flovent (well, there was 2 months when we added singulair for when I was mowing the grass but it didn't seem to make a difference!). 15 years later, I'm down to one puff a day. Am surprised at the few people who are on it. Seems Advair and Syrabicort get prescribed here. I've talked with my doc about it and he seems to think it overkill to start a new patient on one of these. Feels they never seem to want to go to a single med like Flovent so he would rather start with Flovent and go up to Advair if the need is there. How rare for a doc to start off easy on the meRAB! No wonder he's my favorite doc. Hope things keep going well for you!
