I love you Philip Morris

Saw this last night in a very crowded cinema and it was great. No spoliers from me byut ten mins in there is a scene that had everyone gasping!

I am not sure how much publicity the film has had. Jim Carrey is amazing. I found Ewen a bit to camp to be true if you know what I mean.

The story about a man who loves his partner so much he escapes from US jails 4 times to be with him is based on a true story. There are several laugh out loud scenes but some great moments of poignancy.

Go and see it- it won't be out for long i suspect which is a shame.

I saw this on Friday afternoon. Me and 2 other people were the only ones there.

But I enjoyed it, although the last half wasn't as good as the first.

What scene? i saw it yesterday and I cant recall an amazing scene in the first ten minutes. I didnt think much of the film really. And having that twerp from the Orange aRAB in it was annoying. I kept expecting references to orange phones!

I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)

Jim Carrey is back!

I can honestly say 'I love you Phillip Morris' is probably Jim Carrey's greatest performance. . The feel of this film from start to finish was that of a warm, touching picture with moments of ball-bouncingly brilliant comedy.

If Sean P{enn can get an Oscar for his gay portrayal in Milk, then surely Carrey has to get it for this!

One of the best films of the year, worth a trip to the cinema.

8.5/10

This film was awful.

It was advertised as a comedy, but was actually just quite depressing. So boring and I was waiting for it to end from about 40 minutes in.

Just dreadful. Biggest waste of

what ever? You really hated it huh?

Fair enough. I could understand people feeling that the plot was a bit weak or that Ewan's accent was iffy and his hair a bit crap- think nicotine rent boy style- but boring and depressing?

Hey ho- each to his own.

I wanna see this. I remember this was suppose to come out a year ago but like no one would distribute it or something because of the sex scenes so they had to like majorly edit it or something. So expect a director's cut on the dvd.

I saw this today and thought it was ok, nothing more than that.

I think the best thing about it was the fact that it was a true story - amazing to think the guy got away with as much as he did and for so long.

I would give it 5 out of 10.

saw this in the week and i thought it was great
ewans character was so sweet

jeff62 i think the scene they are talking about was

when they showed jim carreys character shagging the guy in the butt yelling he was gonna come

Is it just me....?

The portrayal (sometimes unconvincing) of gay people by straight actors reminRAB me somewhat of entertainment of the past where people would don make-up to play people of different races (also somewhat unconvincingly).

TBH, ILYPM is an insubstantial piece of entertainment, so it probably doesn't matter. Perhaps the criticism is more relevant to something serious like Brokeback Mountain?

Oh, this post deserves some criticism. Straight actors playing gay people being likened to white people blacking up? What about gay actors playing straight people? Did that ever work on screen? Does it maybe still do today?

How does a straight actor "convincingly" play a gay character?

Answer that one, and duck for cover.

It's just one of those things... the "Bruno effect", if you like. The portrayal of extreme, fantasised or parodied gay characters, relationships and sexual practices is troubling... to me.

It's a bit like Michael Bates in It Ain't Alf Hot Mum - the actual portrayal of the Indian character he played was not particularly offensive in itself, it was even kind of affectionate, and he very often got the final word in a situation. But for all that, we just wouldn't do the same thing today.

As for your closing question, the short answer is: I don't know. I'm expressing a level of discomfort about the phenomenon, but I'm not sure there are any easy answers.

The longer answer is by trying for a genuine performance, and not a caricature. I appreciate that this isn't Jim Carrey's "thing", and that someone like Sean Penn in "Milk" can be, and was, much more satisfactory.
