I can relate to you as well. I remember moving from CA to Oregon, I know its a short distance but it feels like a million miles. First off relax. Don't worry about this as much. Its time that you become independent and move on your own. I know its tough and all but trust me this is the best thing you could do now. You're in college and you are taking big and better steps now.
Now getting over the separation from you're family takes a while. Maybe you can call your mom like once a week, or do those live web cam chats. What I ended up doing is making sure I visited my family on vacation. Even on some of the holidays that weren't important. Of course money is a big factor so I had to stop once I was a junior.
Also CA? You're talking to a Cali boy who can simply say all there is to California. For example, CA is different from NY because of the many reasons. Most people think its hot (which it is) but when its freezing it is in similar temperature to NY. CA is also super culturally diverse. There aren't much prejudice and racist people but there are still some. So its most likely you won't be left out. Maybe if you had a friend in California you can ask them to like go sightseeing or get a lot of friends in college to take your mind off your family or something.
