I taught HTML to myself through a book about ten years ago. But I'm sure things have changed a good deal since then. I was just wondering: What are the BIG web design languages out there now? What should I learn if I really want to be able to design cool, effective, and powerful web pages?

Since I'm not exactly an expert, I know that my question might be internally incoherent or make some unjustified assumptions. Please don't hesitate to point that out if it's the case. :)

You should learn CSS, for it's the new stander ed for presentation of a web page.

If you want you could learn xhtml the new <html> standered for web design.(just a bunch of extra code to make it look clean and cool)

Then you may want to go onto PHP or javascript.
Your chose.
