Although carrying out an Anti-Virus (AV) scan is always a good idea when your pc does something odd, it doesn't mean that you always have a virus everyone will try to tell you.
Have you installed any new software, Microsoft Office (word) Anti Virus, Firewall or anything els or changed any settings?
As this is an error message, do you get a microsoft dialog box asking if you want to report the problem?
In the dialog box you see do you have an error codes displayed as well?
I carried out a quick search using google.co.uk on the phrase 'INTERNET EXPLORER HAS A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE' Microsoft have some information about this issue in their Knowledge Base, which may apply to your situation and could be worth checking out. I have included a link to the Microsoft information.
If you are still unable to resolve this issue and all your AV checks come back clean, it may be worth trying to download and try Mozilla Firefox as an alternate to Internet Explorer, this is a little extreme however will get you back on the net surfing if you are unable resolve this issue.
