I just won a fish from the Carnival? I think it's a Comet Goldfish?

I won it at the carnival today and my parents weren't too happy. Anyway, I heard it needs to live in a 20 gallon tank? I don't have that kind of money, but I don't want it to die. Right now it is swimming along the bottom edges of the container I have it in. I am working with a very small budget here. I don't have room for a 20 gallon tank either.

My questions:
How much does a 20 gallon tank cost?
Does it need a filter to live?
Can it live in like a 5 gallon tank?
Does it need a companion(s)?
How much do Comet Fish cost if it does need a companion?

Thanks!

1. A twenty gallon can cost a wide range, depending on the store. Go online for prices, that'd be best.

2. Yes, almost all fish need a filter. Well, it's not absolutely necessary, but goldfish produce a lot of waste and will need a LOT of water changes without a filter, and that can stress your fish out.

3. No, it can't live in a 5 gallon unless you want it to die an early and painful death. Fish in tanks too small stop growing on the outside, but continue growing on the inside. It's called stunted growth, and eventually the fish's innards explode, and the fish will die.

4. Comets, probably need at least one other companion. You might be able to get away without, though.

5. They are cheap, I work at a pet store and they only cost $2.50
