I just started my period and something weird is going on?

So I just got my period and this is my second time getting it. But I saw a little brown stuff in my underwear, so I immediately put a pad on. But then for a couple of days it was brown stuff in my pad, not red, just brown. And then today, I checked and I just had discharge, so I was relieved that my brown stuff (which I thought was my period) is gone. But then when I went to the restroom, I saw a mix of discharge and red stuff in my underwear, so I put on a pad. I don't know what's going on now, I'm really confused. Can someone explain to me if this brown stuff is like a sign that my real period is going to follow along. Or is it something abnormal?
