I just saw an ad that complained about sales tax on juice & soda........?

This lady, shown carrying a bag of soda, said "it may be pennies.....but those pennies add up. We're trying to make ends meet."

Um............
Juice & Soda are luxuries!
You can drink water for virtually nothing.

and you shouldn't drink soda anyway because it's unhealthy for you.

If you're trying to make ends meet.........why not drink water instead of more expensive and unhealthy beverages!

I fully support taxing soda because it's free revenue for the state!
free revenue that I don't have to pay.

Sales Tax on soda is a voluntary tax to pay.
You don't have to drink soda.
and you shouldn't drink soda; it shortens your life expectancy.

Those commercials were paid for by soda companies and I don't really think many people hold the opinions expressed in it. I agree that a soda tax is a good idea considering over consumption of soda is one of the leading causes of childhood obesity and onset diabetes. But soda companies are trying to appeal to fake populism by spinning this as more government intrusion into our lives and more taxes. But you've got it right. Not many people have problems with taxing cigarettes because they're unhealthy and lead to illnesses. Well so does soda so I see no problem with taxing that as well to discourage people from consuming too much of it.

I agree, except about the juices. if they are healthy juices they should be classed as food and not taxed.

I lean more towards taxing empty calorie foods not just beverages.

*personally I think junk food/drinks are worse that cigarettes. Kids can't buy cigarettes and they sell soda and sugary snacks IN schools all across the country.
