i just moved to cape Canaveral florida. i've been wondering what kind of fish these are?

i go to the cocoa beach pier and as the waves come in there are these cute tiny little fish but as soon as i get out to my knees they get to be about 6 inches long. in the water they look grey flat and just like little mini sand sharks i caught some with a net and out of the water thex look like ordinary shiny silver fish. what's with the optical illusion. what are they.
