I just got my first betta fish?

And I have a few questions.

1. Is it ok for them to swim to the top of the tank and take a breath periodically?

2. After filling his tank up with tap water and putting some sort of cleaning stuff (I have no idea what it is, I think it helps get rid of chlorine or something...) I just kinda dumped him in there, along with the water I got from the store. How bad an idea was that?

3. Is it bad his fins aren't unfurled?

4. What the heck should I name a purple fish!?!?!

- ACK. >< I just reread #2. I waited about 10 minutes before I dumped him in. Sorry about that.
#3- His fins are tucked close to his body. And I have a 1/2 gallon tank with no filter.
 
1 Yes I think that's fine.
2 WAY BAD IDEA! You have to let the water be cycled. Do you have a filter? You will definitely need one for any fish. A heater would be nice to but...its only one fish.
3 I don't know what unfurled is.
4 ...Barney...hahaha or whatever else you want.
P.S. Puting some freshwater snails in there would help keep the tank clean. :)
