you better not hope i find out where you are living or im gonna report you to the cops about dog abuse

put a ticking clock in the room or play a radio low volume. i used to buy mine baby cuddly toys to snuggle up to as they have no loose bits or buttons or eyes so cant cause harm. if he is not destructive give him a warm water bottle something to remind him of mum

Dogs don't like to be left alone, so every time you put him in, give him something to chew on or something to keep him busy. Make sure that he gets lots of exercises before you put him in. So when he is tired or busy chewing or playing, he won't whine. He might still whine a little, but he will eventually stop.

at 4 years old a lab/shepherd doenst need to sleep in a crate. i have a shepherd and he sleeps next to my bed.

Get rid of the crate.

To me a crate is a cop out for actual training.

Ignore him.
If you let him out, try to calm him down, or simply try to tell him no it's attention. He'll then associate whining as getting what he wants so he'll keep on.
Just ignore him, and don't let him out unless he's being quiet.
