Another thing clear is that Expressvu is selling satellite bandwidth to Dish. First half of N5, now Dish has applied to US FCC for authorization to use the other half. Industry Canada will just rubber stamp any FCC decision a la the use of 129.

During the very first phase of talks about taking BCE private, Teachers' (I think) mentioned about selling BeV for between $2 to $3 billion as one of the first thing they are gona do. I understand that they might not be the decision makers in this whole affair, but shutting down BeV? C'mon, be reasonable... What does BCE's $32B debt have to do with BeV surviving or not?

I don't see any problem in selling it to Shaw (I don't think Shaw wants it, though). Just like letting Sirius and XM merge. There are enough alternatives to get your video fix...

It may be a free market in the US but not here ibn Canada. The CRTC still has a say as does the agency that liciences spots in space for Canada.

Perfect example of it not being a fre market, BCE was sold to the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund along with(I believe spme US investors). For the deal to go through it had to be approved by the CRTC, Department of Commers & trade, and I think some thimng with the Biz bureau. The Teachers Fund MUST have majority sharesw and control of BCE its the law in Canada any Communications company ie Telephone,cell,TV/Radio the controling interests must be Canadian. So no its not a free market.

Also BEV is competeing mainly in Ontario & Quebec against Rogers,Videotron. The "Key" here is 'Bundling' I'm not sure of what the rules are in the US for Bundlimng by one provioder, but here itake all your services from one provider ie phone, internet, cell,^TV you can Bundle everything into one package and save money.

And thats why I don't think BEV will sold.

As for the leasing part as far as I know Dish has leased 16 TRS at 72 from BEV & 16 TRS from Ciel at 129(I think thats the spot?).

Even if Dish gets FCC approval to get those other 16 TRS spots from BEV, BEV can[t just 'lease' those other 16 TRS from them they have to get approval from not sure if its the CRTC or some other Canadian Agency?

Where did I say anything about Shaw buying Expressvu? Nowhere.

I stated that the option is open for BCE to become a customer of SBS (Shaw Broadcast Services) .. just like the cable companies are.

What do you think? That the new CEO at BCE will just keep opening doors til he finds the one that has the $32B savings behind it? It $75m here (as yesterday's layoff notices will save), $200m from Charlie to buy 1/2 of N5 transponders, etc. etc. etc.

Satellite tv is merely a strategic defensive mechanism by BCE to minimize bundling losses to their cable competitors in Ontario & Quebec. If it looks like they could save cash by buying the service from SBS (& they can deal with SBS); you can be sure that it will be considered. That Expressvu can be sold for $2b or $3b to some other Canadian company is just wishful thinking.

If Bell does get approval to lease the remaining 16 transponders to Dish, Bell will be effectively dead in the water. I for no would hope Industry Canada stands firm with a "NO" to to the lease. However, history is not on our side.
Really what is Bell thinking. Dish and DirectTV are adding HD channels by the boat load. Both will have 130 to 150 HD channels by the end of this year.
What's Bells plan? Hope we don't notice what happening in the US? No wonder people are buying FTA receivers!

I don't think that most channels in Canada will move to HD in the next few years. They should, but I don't think they will be able to afford to upgrade all their equipment. The 2011 digital switchover is for OTA channels only, and only has to be digital, not HD.

In the context of what you are discussing I would call them TFA receivers. Theft From Air because anyone using an "FTA" receiver to get dish is not subscribing to the service.

Wher is this "sky is falling" coming from?
N4 hasn't launched yet, nobody knows how long it will take for BeV make use of it - and we are talking about leasing or not N5?
C'mon...

The key words here are "up to." Dish has applied for permission to use "up to" 32 transponders in the US. That's common practice, even when only 16 have been acquired, as is the case. Any speculation on EV or Industry Canada giving away the other 16 is just that, speculation. In the long run, Dish or EV will be better off acquiring new slots that provide a full 32 transponders. That may still happen.

BTW, EV and Canada have not lost any space to the US. EV is simply subletting 16 TPs at 72.7. Most leases end or can be terminated prematurely.

I think, that bell will sell to someone, who knows who at this point.... All I can say is that im pretty sure Bell is not exiting the television buisness, I believe they are going to seriously start thinking IPTV at this point, and they are going to start putting alot more focus on there Mobitlity service.

Granduncle, the Internet is a great tool for information but it does have one huge problem. Once a rumour starts, especially one with a negative spin, everyone tends to chime in as if the rumour has already been confirmed. Before long everyone believes it. This leads to the panic/unjustified looking for the worst case scenarios that are prevalent on most on-line discussion forums. It is like living in a world of Chicken Littles where the sky (new satellite, government program, environment, oil supply, you name it) is always falling; a world run not on evidence/facts but by fear.

(Sorry for being off-topic but I felt this had to be said).
