So I just cooked some fish, wrapped tightly in foil, with a very small campfire using the remains of my old christmas tree, and now I'm reading that pine is toxic to use when smoking. I only cooked it for about 20 minutes, and the entire time it wasn't directly in the fire, but on a rack above, tightly wrapped in foil. It doesn't taste bad (and doesn't even have the taste of smoke at all) but I'm kinda freaking out. Am I going to be okay?
Well, from what I've read, when smoking meat, you shouldn't ever use softwoods because of the sap, and when it burns, it creates creosote, and that's what's highly toxic. I know it wasn't exactly smoking it, but I just got highly paranoid when I saw that you shouldn't use that wood for it. The fish is actually quite tasty, wild alaskan salmon with potatoes and butter.
