I installed an amp in my car and it does not work. What could be wrong?

I just installed an amp in my truck. I have the power cable running from the battery and have the ground cable for the amp going to a nail. I do have rca cable going to the back of the head unit. I do not have the remote turn on cable plugged in as I forgot to do that. Could that be why my amp will not turn on. What does the remote turn on wire do? Just to let you know my amp does not turn on or the light does not turn on of the amp.
Sorry I meant to say the ground is connected to a SCREW. What makes a good ground?
