I heard in astronomy class that hypotheticaly if you stood near a blackhole

you would grow very tall very fast? until your body was riped in half,

because you're being sucked into it so slowly (as if it weren't sucking you in at all and time stood still),
and there's so much more pressure on your feet than on your head.

is this true? and how tall can you get before being riped in half? 8 feet? 10 feet?

Spaghettification is a colorful way of saying you would be bifurcated as the tidal forces of the black hole pulled apart the atoms that comprise your body. The gravity is so strong that you "stretch" at the atomic level, where you would appear to stretch or grow, but very quickly your atoms would be pulled apart and you would exist only as a streaming line of sub atomic particles moving near the speed of light toward the singularity of the Black Hole.

The TYPE or mass of the Black Hole can have interesting effects. If you were to get close to a stellar mass black hole with an event horizon about 15 miles wide, the tidal forces would be so great that you would likely be ripped apart about 100 miles before the edge of the event horizon. If you were to approach a super massive black hole, the tidal forces are spread out over a much greater area. The event horizon of these types of black holes are as large as the our entire solar system. You would most likely be able to cross through the event horizon in one piece. Of course, you would never be able to get out but I imagine you would see an incredible show. That is of course before the tidal forces eventually tore you to pieces.

Yes, though the level of radiation might be high enough to destroy your body first. I don't know exactly. It would depend on the tensile strength of your muscles, so probably about 5 metres.

It would start in a very similar way to the use of the Medieval rack, stretching you out until you die.

I can't give you exact specifications about the rack or even when it was used, as I didn't really expect any questions about the Spanish Inquisition...

One moment... someone is at my door...

It's true. The body parts closest to the black hole will have much more pull on them than the parts featheriest away. The closer you get the more the pull multiplies And you would actually disintegrate and be stretcher out over thousands if not millions of miles as you are sucked into the void at close the speed of light.
