There is a tapping noise which is only coming from one side of the engine. I wasn't sure if it was just the lifter(s) or if it could be a thrown rod? How would I know? The car hadn't been started in awhile and when it started up a billow of white smoke came out of the exhaust but seemed to subside after running for a little while.
The noise is def. in the top of the engine, there seems to be no loss of power that I can tell...the car also has a bad alternator so will not stay charged. The noise is consistent and speeds up with increased RPMs.

It's a lifter. Chemical additives that might help clean the lifter, a valve not getting enough lubrication to prevent the rocker from clicking, because the valve is sticking. Some are Lucas oil additive for lifters. When all else fails, it may need a valve job. Be suspicious of carbon build up on lifters and valves.
