...done without that tool? I ma changeing a ignition key lock, and have to take the steering wheel off, it takes a speacail tool can it be done with out that tool. that tool is exspencive to get for one time use.
 
if it is a GM, then no. The steering lock ring is spring loaded and held in by a small ring clip. you can damage the components inside without the tool.some parts stores rent tools, or try harbor freight.buy the tool and use it, and then sell it on craigs list.But I will say that with out the tool, it is gonna cause damage and then you will be paying more to fix the column than the repair is worth
