I have ticking noise 97 Chevy Lumina?

I bought the car used, the owner was a mechanic and said the place they work could not figure it out but after a week of owning it the Service Engine Soon light came on, they had replace valve covers,oil pan and some other things. I think they said a tune up also. Could it be misfiring? I just moved back to my home town and don't know any reputable mechanics so I am a little concerned. I am just starting over my life and can't afford to be taken adavantage of...thanks
 
Ticking noise that speeds up and slows down with the engine speed is a sticking or worn our hydraulic lifter. A hydraulic lifter is what opens the intake or exhaust valve in each cylinder. It is quite common problem on old worn-out engines. The lifters can be replaced or ignored for now if you don't have a lot of money. It means that the engine will not be running at best efficiency and gas mileage will not be as good as it should be, nor acceleration as fast as it could be. If the ticking sound is not associated with engine speed we need more information from you.
