It was just another school day; as usual I was sitting alone in first period math class. I was twirling my black hair around my fingers and not really paying attention, I usually just sat there daydreaming or just didn’t pay attention in the classes I had alone. I wasn’t a bad student; I just hated this school like every other idiot in this crappy town and stupid excuse for a school. I looked up when I heard a tap on the door. The short stumpy teacher with red fuzzy hair walked over to the door and swung it open in an angry manner, then quickly looked guilty when she realized it was the principle standing in the doorway. Mr. Hillon stood there in his business suit, that looked way to fancy for school and his balding head was almost blinding as the light rebounded off it and straight into everyone’s eyes. It was hard not to shield my eyes as he stepped into the classroom with a boy tagging behind looking extremely nervous and shy. Everyone’s eyes were on the boy as he tried to avoid eye contact with everyone but it seemed as though he couldn’t help but look up every so often.
“Class, we would like you all to meet our new student, his name is Jake and he just moved here from Victoria!” Mr. Hillon exclaimed… just a little too enthusiastically.
I quickly scanned the room to look for an empty seat and unfortunately for me, there was only two. One next to me and I sat right up the back of the class, or one next to Jordan, the butch kid that thinks he’s so tough. I held my breath as our teacher Miss Goltin scanned the room for the same reason.
“Okay Jake, you can sit next to Jordan for this lesson, take a seat and take out your book,” She smiled to reveal her yellow teeth and motioned to Jordan, I saw him pull a disgusted face and laughed internally. Jake mumbled something and shuffled over to sit down.
“Don’t even look at me, loser,” I heard Jordan hiss as Jake sat down. I felt kinda bad for him, but it’s not like he was my friend. The lesson dragged on and eventually ended after what seemed ages. As soon as the bell rang I was out of my seat and practically out of the classroom.
I met up with my friend Larissa in the main quad and headed for Art class. We trudged along to class, keeping under the sheltered pathways so we didn’t get soaked from the pouring rain.
“Nataya did you do that assignment that was due today? You know the portrait one…” Rissa asked as we climbed the stairs to the classroom.
“Shit! I totally forgot man, what should I say?” I quickly started to think of excuses, which were usually lame, but our art teacher was like some weird pagan, vegan guy who was totally gullible. Rissa laughed out loud and looked at me with her look that said ‘I have an awesome idea which is probably stupid but it will hopefully work’
“What?” I eyed her as we walked into the classroom.
“Just say that you’ve been helping at the animal shelter on the highway because you found a lost dog that had been hit by a car or something!” She whispered as we sat in our usual seats at the back of the class. The lesson started with Mr. Toms asking for everyone to hand in their assignments, we all filed up next to his desk and when it was my turn I told him exactly what Rissa had said and his expression was pretty much a Kodak moment. He let me off with just a reminder that it had to be in by the end of the week and to send his ‘get well and stay well’ to the “lost, injured dog” that I was supposedly caring for.
About halfway through the lesson there was a knock on the door and Mr. Toms yelled “Enter” from his desk as if he were a bloody Pharaoh summoning his slave. He was a pretty cool teacher but he was so up-himself that it would most likely take a ladder and some lubricant to get him out. Jake the new kid then walked into the class and over to Mr. Toms’ desk, he mumbled something and trudged to the empty seat… which just happened to be next to Rissa. Rissa looked at me and frowned, and I couldn’t help but giggle just a bit.
“Hey, I’m Nataya, and this is Larissa… but you can call us Taya and Rissa,” I said awkwardly. He just stared at me for a moment and I felt severely self conscious.
“I’m Jake, but you can call me Jake.” He said awkwardly, then laughed at his own joke and I had to look away so I didn’t burst into laughter in his face.
