I have some questions about natural Hamster habitat?

I want to start a wild hamster colony in the forest near my house. I live outside of Santa Cruz in the redwood forest. The climate is nice, it doesn't get too cold. When I was little I had a hamster and I used to let it run around wild for days at a time, it survived ok. So I'm thinking a colony of wild hamsters could thrive in the forest. People give hamsters away all the time so they're cheap to get - even at the pet store they are cheap.

What I am wondering is what should I do to make the colony successful, and also what is the natural habitat for wild hamsters? Also does it matter which breed? Should I get all Teddy Bear hamsters or mix it up with other breeds?
