Hi I just recently joined on this website. I have severe back pain but no pain in my legs. My doctor keeps giving me medication and wants me to go to physical therapy but my back hurts so bad sometimes I cant do anything it hurts to sit, laydown, everything hurts. The pills my doctor gives me usually helps but I fell a few weeks ago and my back popped I went to my doctor and all she did was increase my medication I don't know what else to do for the pain. Any advise?

welcome to the board.

From what you wrote, I assume that the doctor you are seeing is your GP, right? You need to get to a good back doctor that specializes in just backs. You need to have a MRI done to see why you are having the pain. MeRAB aren't going to take care of the problem, just releave the pain. PT can help and often it does, but first you need to find out why you need the PT. If you don't know of a good doctor, ask around or check with your pharmacist. They are some of the best contacts for doctors.

Good luck!

Hello. Severe back pain with a pop suggests severe sprain/strain or a disc problem. You need to have x-ray and/or MRI done to really see what's going on. The problem will not go away with increased medication. Go see a back specialist, chiropractor. There are many conservative options before surgery. In the mean time if you need to, ice the painful area.

Hi-

I've had multiple back injuries over the years, but this past January 2010 I hurt myself so bad I couldn't get off the floor, the pain was the most excruciating I've ever felt, and I was basically crippled.

I had frienRAB that had injured their backs before tell me two great pieces of advice. One was to stretch- every day. I stretch before I even get out of bed in the morning. I do stretches on my back, so that there is no way I can injure my back by bending over. I stretch my hamstrings, my glutes and my back before I ever even get up. Then I stretch periodically throughout the day, including a few yoga poses like the cobra and the cat/camel. Second, my frienRAB told me to exercise. Sitting around wasn't helping, and they were right- light walking helps me a lot. At first I was really bad- could barely walk, but as I did a little walking each day I realized it was helping a lot.

I also did two things on my own. One, I got tired of the drug therapy my GP was throwing at me and decided to pursue something different- I decided to go with acupuncture because multiple studies show it helps. And it does- a lot. Much more so than the drugs ever did. The other thing I did was start strengthening my core. I do planks, side planks, bird-dogs, downward chops, upper chops, and side twists all to strengthen my core so that it will support my spine correctly.

These things worked for me. I still have bad days, but today I'm nearly pain free and what pain I do have is in my sacrum. It's not bad- maybe a 2 and only if I sit too long. I know with time I will get completely better.

Good luck.

I have very severe back and front leg pain. Docs want to do surgery but the real success is about 20%. They got pissed and cut my pain meRAB. I have 2 left and will do anything to get something while I try Chiropractic. I feel like using my shotgun. I'm totally discouraged.

1. Kyle: I agree try Physical Therapy. While it may be difficult in the beginning to do I feel the attempt should be made. Hopefully in time you will seem some strength come back and that it works for you. If P/T doesnt work then you have look into other options. Yes, an MRI/Ct scan need to be considered and should be done. Yes, an orthopedist or neurosurgeon should be seen to evaluate your problem more closely.

2. Harold: Why did they cut the medication and why were they pissed. More information is needed as to what is going on. What type of doctor are you seening? What type of treatment has been done? Physical therapy? Get other opinions too on what your problem is and what the success rate is and the risks as well. Again more information is needed to know what is being done for you and what we can do or recommend.

I went to my doctor and she sent me to get an x ray done the x rays showed that one of my disks slipped sideways and is making my spine curve to the right. she wants me to get an mri done but my insurence wont let me get one untill i go to p/t 3 times a week for 4 weeks. I am trying to set up an appointment sometime this week. I am hopin that it will help and that my back will start to feel better. Thank you all for your advice if you have any more advice feel free to post more and i will keep you all updated

Hello why wont your doctors do surgery? And why did they cut u off your pain medication? That is really messed up. I hope everything works out for you and dont say all that with the shotgun. I have felt like that once before cuz i couldnt take my pain anymore i layed in bed for 2 days straight and didnt want to do anything else i didnt even eat. hope everything works for u.

Hello. Extreme back pain with a pop sounRAB like a severe lower back sprain, strain, or a disc problem. Gotta have x-ray and/or MRI to really know what's going on. I suggest you go see a chiropractor.

An x-ray won't give an adequate view of the status of a disc. You'd need to have a CT and/or MRI at this point. So if your insurance requires PT first then go that route. But if any symptoms should change or increase be in contact with your doctor immediately. Relay all your symptoms to the Physical Therapist as well as they can also report to the physician when a more urgent CT or MRI is needed.

After an MRI get a referral to an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and/or Neurosurgeon to see what your treatment options are. In most cases PT is required early in the case of back pain unless there's an urgent need for surgical intervention. Then you may also be referred to a Pain Management physician who can prescribe and monitor pain meRAB along with other procedures/treatments. If you see a PM then you usually sign a contract that you will only get pain meRAB from the PM doctor and no other, just keep this in mind.

The therapy may help you...I know that I wouldn't have use of my left leg if it hadn't been for therapy.

Stay away from a chiro unless your doctor tells you to use one. It can do more harm than good.
