...instructions to repair it. HELP I am pretty mechanically inclined and don't think I will have any trouble doing this. I am really just looking for a good place to find instructions and illustrations on this. Any suggestions out there or pointers.

Lost compression can be alot of things, none of which are easy.
My guess is you have a 4 cylinder. Thats good! Disconnect the battery and rotate the crank to bring the suspect piston up. Then gently feel around withn a long thin tool to see if you have a hole in the piston. If thats the case, lets just say, some problems are best solved with a timely fire.

a detailed parts description on line is alldata.com. It also details maintenance instructions. Isn't the Mazda the same as a ford ranger. I saw one in Maryland where I live and the guy was asking 1500 for a 2000. The transmission was bad. I looked on www.car-part.com and it would have been a pretty good deal to replace the transmission. You might want to do the same with the engine. Its not that expensive. It will be an expensive repair. The gasket kit alone will be expensive. Make sure you take the head to a machine shop if that's the route you take.

Repair books such as Haynes or Chiltons can be purchased at most Auto Zone stores or at book stores by order.

don's right.. and good luck.. only a few thing cause it none easy to fix but if you go thte time and place to pull it a part and rebuild go for it could be a stuck/ broken valve bad ,,cam ,, , or broke ring
