The engine is on a john deer 165 hydro lawn mower. It had no compression so I pulled the head and found the intake valve seat had came out of the block. It looks like I could press it back in and it would be fine. It fits good and tight and It isnt damaged but when I tore the engine apart I found that all the cooling fins were completly stopped up. So im thinking the heat made it come loose. Should i lock tight it or any suggestions on keeping it in there once I press it back in. thanks for any help.

clean everything in a solvent to get it very clean put a little lock tight on the seat and put it in place then take a center punch and tap just enough to make a dimple where the seat meets the block three dimples around the seat should hold it. you may have to readjust the valve

I think that you need to have a new seat put into the block. Fitting it tight probably won't keep it there. Years ago I had a seat come out of a briggs engine, after several beers I made a shim out of a bush lite can and put the valve seat back in place. It is still running today. But, I think that I was lucky. If your machine is worth anything I would have a seat put in properly. If you do it yourself you will still have to lap the valve to get it to seat.
