I have just bought an outdoor light that has 3 connectors N-L the existing wires...

...are red and black.Connection? Can anyone advise where the red and black wires get connected?
 
Best thing to do, with out more info available, is to see if manufacturer of light has a website. My opinion, and it is an opinion only, is that if the light is a 110/120v fixture the N may refer to neutral and the L refer to load. In your case red should be load.

When it comes to electricity please seek out a professional.
 
If your in the uk the red is the live and the nauteral is black, connect the red to the L connection and the black to the N connection. Other connection is for the earth.
As already stated thou if in any doubt, call an electrician out, better to be safe than dead.
