I have DSL modem and am trying to set-up a wireless network.?

The internet/modem works when I am hardwired with either computer. The wireless router works and I can connect to the router with the laptop. When I have the router connected to the modem I cannot get access to the internet. It seems like the router and the modem are not communicating. I have had the modem for 6+ years and the router(s) are 3 and 2 years old (I have tried 2 different). Any suggestions?
