i have an unused building joined on to my house and i cant find out who owns it...

Go to your state or county tax office and inquire of the address and ownership. Who knows the shed may be your property and not know it.
 
also..you should know for how long is that building in there, and since when it hasn`t been used or paied taxes for it.
because, for example, in my country, if nobody payed the taxes for it, for a very long time, and you decide to pay the land taxes for it (even the backwards one, for years before), after 30 years since you pay the taxes the building becomes automatically yours, no matter who owned it before.
