I have an electronics/engineering question!?

I have to make something in concept form first and eventually at the end of the semester build one.
This is the just of the "problem"

Two objects:
Object S is Stationary
Object M is Moving

-M is approaching S
-When M is 15cm from S a light must be activated on S

How would I build this...

(If this doesn't make sense please let me know and I will clarify it a bit more.)
 
how accurate does the 15m need to be?

You might need a rangefinder such as is used in cameras.

what are the objects?

Why would you tell us only limited information? provide all you have, that increases the chance of a good answer.
