It is not the type where there is a little swith on the door-I close the door and the lights stay on. I gewt up in the AM and I need a jump...if I am trouble shooting what should I do first...will a diagnostics test show the problem? It is a 2002 four door.

tdot has a good answer. It is most likely a stuck switch in one of the door frames. There is two other possibilities.
1. Somebody moved the swich position for the dome lamp to the "always on" position (this happens very often).
2. There is a short in the wiring between one of the door switches and the body control computer. This could be a tough one to track down.
While you are waiting for the problem to be fixed, pull the "courtesy lights" fuse from the fuse box. This will mean a dark interior when you open the door, but at least your battery won't drain every night.

The interior lights can be turned on & off from inside (bypassing the door switch). There should be a "roll" switch somewhere on the dash that will dim / brighten the dash lights. This same switch is sometimes used as an interior light switch too. You may have turned on the inside lights by mistake.

Your door ajar switch is in the latch assm on the doors. Take some wd-40 or similar spray and open each door and spray it into the latch, then close and open the door 7-8 times quickly and it should take care of the problem.. Just a hint, roll down a window and turn the key on, that way you will know which door was sticking.
