A little puff of smoke came from the alternator (but it could have came from something under it or near it) and now my battery isn't being charged. I assume I fried the alternator? Could it be anything else?
you assumed right. it,s the alternator that burnt up.when you hooked the battery cables up backwards you shorted the alternator out. it,s time for a new 1.
