I have an 83 chevy truck dual tanks what is the problem?

I have a 83 1/2 ton chevy truck duel tanks the tanks use to switch fine now 1 side will read regular like the gauge is working fine but when you switch the tanks over the gauge goes all the way past full and it seems like it is stuck the valve that makes it switch from tank to tank cause it will run for a little bit and then it will die like it is sucking air is there any body that had this prolblem or might know what it could be....PLZ
 
Sounds like you lost the ground on 1 tank and it is out of fuel. fill it up and if it runs on that tank, you know it's either a bad ground or sending unit. Good luck.
 
The fuel tank control valve is most likely at fault. Be sure to check with a test lamp at the break away before condemning it as it could also be the switch or wiring.
