if a 'booted' version the spring assist mechanism will hav e failed and best to one from a breaker yard. have a Friend go with You again probably around £20 or so and an hours work.
Not quite sure about your car, but most cars have hydraulic struts these days. If this is the case with yours, you could easily replace them yourself. (Click in one end, couple of screws at the other). Garage will charge you minimum of £80 per hour, or if you're lucky £40 for 1/2 hour.
Go to your "local car breakers" (with a handy friend).
Find your model car,
Test replacements "Hyd/units(not sure of their name).
Remove and paid the man
Estimated £10 max
Fit to your car.
