I have a Toyota Camry 2000 CE , Stereo volume knob not working?

I have a Toyota Camry 2000 CE, the volume knob of the stereo is Free, i.e. volume is always fixed (on lower side), now how do i know, if the problem is in the Stereo OR the Knob ?

Is it possible to take out the Knob and try to increase the volume ????
More information.... The knob is moving freely,, so now how do i take out the Knob, without damaging the stereo???
 
if it freely spins then the knob is broken, but if u feel some resistance then the volume control assembly is shot, need new radio. get a cheapo from crutchfield which u can do yourself and they include the kit.
