I have a T-mobile question :)?

I am a current boost mobile customer and i'm looking to switch to T-Mobile, the only thing is i have a t-mobile phone already (the G1) cause my friend dose not want it anymore. Do i have to buy a new phone from the T-Mobile store to start a new plan or can i use the one i have now?
