HTC and other Android phones remain unlocked forever. In fact, the iPhone is the only device I've ever heard of that re-locks jailbroken phones when you try updating them with iTunes. Incredible.

Look up your phone and see a lit of what modified ROMs are available. Installing these will require rooting your phone (not the same as unlocking), so there's a small element of risk involved. However, I've heard of very few cases of users doing these things and bricking their phones. I've rooted both my old T-Mobile/HTC G1 and my current Nexus One. Never had a problem.
