I have a Sony a230 and I'm beginner so i have questions?

I'm not so sure the type of names of lenses, so I don't know what type of lenses are good for different types of shots. I would really love to be able to take pictures from far away, like long distance shots. is there any lenses anyone would recommend? and not just for long range pictures for any other types of shots as well..
