I have a question about unlimited texting.. and sprint.?

So right now I have the 1000 texts a month for $10.
This month, lets just say I used a lot more than 1000. So if I switch to unlimited right now, do I still have to pay the fees for going over? Or will it just automatically let me start paying the $20 a month for unlimited?
