i have a question about hitchhiking/travel/ USA?

Hitchhiking is illegal. I am not sure what they would do to you. But no matter what preparations you have. Someone alot badder and meaner than you is out there. So I dont suggest doing it.
 
i want to travel from bc, canada, to los angeles ca, i know i can do it, ive hitch hiked before, im very prepared if i run into anyone who may hurt me, im tough and i have items that i can use to my advatage, however im wondering, in the states i will go through until i reach ca what are the rules on hitchhiking? is it illegal? if a cop sees me doing this will he do anything? any advice u can give me on this would be greatly appreciated
