I have a problem with my '82 Suzuki GS 550 losing revs on idle, then dying?

This mainly happens at traffic lights, or waiting to get on to a roundabout for example. I'll be sitting at the lights, with the bike idling, and then I'll notice the revs slowing down, so I then have to open the throttle a little to keep it alive. I have had it just die on me before when I don't do this.

Also, when it occasionally idles normally, I'll give it a couple of revs and then it starts to slow. I would have thought a few revs would help, but in fact it seems to exacerbate the problem. I have to keep the throttle open just a little, but constantly.

If anyone has any ideas of the cause and/or the solution, I would be truly grateful. I'm thinking maybe it's a carb issue, or perhaps air filter? I just don't have the technical knowledge to diagnose the problem properly. Thanks in advance.
The spark plugs have all been replaced with new ones very recently. This problem has been present since before the new plugs, and is still present now.

sounds to me like you need your carbs cleaned and adjusted, now you can clean the carbs yourself but you need to find someone with a special tool for the carbs to adjust them, judging by the age of your bike, you should check the air filter too
