Depending upon the size of your lawn, it could be a long process.
When a lawn is extremely uneven there are a several things that can be done.
1. Get a hand roller (you can rent these). You fill it with water and roll it over the high spots, trying to compress them. If you do this, I would recommend that you wear steel toed shoes as protection.
2. Take a square ended shovel and cut layers off the high spots and use the soil to fill in the low spots. This is difficult and time consuming. You will need to roll the lawn when your finished to evenly compact it.
3. Hire a professional contractor to regrade your lawn. Then you or they can either reseed or cover with sod.
