alternator smoked.The truck? the truck cranks and runs but only off the battery.I put a new alternator on it.but battery light is still on andfor some reason cant get a reading that there is even an alternator chargeing the battery.checked fuses.one 20 amp blown.changed.any suggestions?Please help.
 
It greatly depends upon where you purchased the alternator and if it was in actuality a new one or a re manufactured one. You have obviously gotten a defective alternator. Then there is the remote possibility that you have fried the engine computer, too.

I have a lincoln town car that had a bad battery and a bad alternator. I replaced the batt and the alternator. Purchased the alternator at O'Reillys Auto Parts. After four defective alternators from the supplier, I gave up got my money back and took it to the dealership. They installed a Ford Manufactured alternator and the problem was resolved!
 
You will have to check every wire from the alternator to the battery and charging system as well as all fuse links. Best get a wiring diagram and properly test everything connected.
