i was moving somethings then i backed up to my porch turned it off and that was it it never turned back on i looked at the starter battery all the obvious things it might be (at least what i could think of) , it has been sitting for 4 years now and i don't know where to start to try to get it running especially now that it has sat for so long even if i try what should i try to look for why it never started it didn't even click over what steps should i take so i don't burn the motor if i can find the original problem

Pull a spark plug wire off , insert a phillips screwdriver into the end, place the shank of the screwdriver near a metal object ( bolt head, etc), have someone try to start it and watch for spark. If I remember correct, that year still has conventional ignition , so if there is no spark, I would say the condenser inside the distributor cap is shot or perhaps the ignition points are not firing. If memory serves me correct, the point gap should be about 30 thousandth of an inch. Assuming it is getting fuel, you can easily check by removing the breather and moving the throttle linkage while lookin down into the carb, my next guess would be a slipped timing chain. Sitting that long it very well could have stretched and when you shut it off, it slipped a tooth or two.
