I have a betta fish that is acting a little strange. I don't know if it is normal?

He will bury himself under the marbles on the bottom of his bowl. At first I thought he was dead. He seems really inactive, then suddenly will be darting around. Now he just sits at the top and stays a little on his side. It also seems like he has a had time swimming down to the bottom. Any ideas?
